Challenge 1 of 12: Go Bananas

by Yolanda

I’ve gotten tremendous feedback and good amount of suggestions for the 12 flavors of ice cream I shall attempt, referring back to my previous post on the 60 day challenge. I’ve found that you, odd but adventurous readers, are craving some very interesting flavors, such as peanut butter, faloodeh (Persian rose water w/ noodles), sour gummy worm, Oolong tea, wheat grass, jasmine tea, yam, and macadamia. You folks are weird, but I love weird! Needless to say, I’ve never tasted any of these and am ready to take on the challenge.

Challenge 1 of 12: Banana Ice Cream

This was the first flavor idea that came out of Gary’s mouth when I asked him what he would want to devour. Go figure. Since I’ve never had banana ice cream, I decided it would be a nice and easy start.

For the recipe, I used AllRecipe.com’s Banana Walnut Ice Cream, eilminated the walnuts and added more bananas.

INGREDIENTS:

3 1/4 cups half-and-half
3 bananas
8 egg yolks, beaten
1 cup white sugar
2 1/2 cups heavy whipping cream
DIRECTIONS
  1. Heat 2 1/2 cups half-and-half over medium heat until small bubbles form. Put aside.
  2. Mix egg yolks with sugar. Pour half-and-half into egg mixture
  3. Heat mixture until bubbles form. Remove from heat. Stir in whipping cream.
  4. Puree the bananas and 3/4 cup half-and-half in a blender until smooth. Add puree to bowl and mix well. Cover and refrigerate until cold, 3 to 4 hours.
  5. Pour puree in ice cream maker for 25-30 minutes, or according to instructions. Freeze mixture overnight.

RESULT:

I wasn’t patient enough to wait for the bananas to ripen, so the banana flavor wasn’t as sweet, but still had a yummy strong flavor to it. This ice cream doesn’t taste too sweet which is what I love most about it. I’ve been told it tastes like frozen banana cream pie, so I’m not sure if that’s good or bad. I recommend this to banana flavor lovers who don’t need their ice cream to be the sweetest thing in the world.  I tried adding caramel to it, and it worked perfectly. It’s a low key, yet flavorful dessert.

  1. Yum that sounds fantastic for banana lovers, what a good start to the challenge. The idea of adding caramel was a good one to sweeten things up a bit. Looking forward to more yummyness ahead!

Hmmmm bananas and caramel…. Yumm-o. I love it on crepe’s and I’m sure that it’s just as delicious in icecream. Hope your stomach survives this delectable challenge – along with those around you that get to sample your icecream!

You need a scoring system such as number of scoops out of 5.

Scoring system would be awesome! Let’s see if there are any plugins out there for scoops out of 5.
