Challenge 10 of 12: Green Bean Ice Cream
No, not “green tea” ice cream, or “red bean” Azuki ice cream, but you read correctly….green bean ice cream. Due to mom’s personal request, I was given an order to create this new ice cream flavor. She cooked a whole pot of sweetened green bean soup and passed it on to me, so how could I refuse. I ended up dumping tons of green beans in the mix which made the ice cream very chunky and less creamy like I would have hoped for. However, if you love green bean and need to a cool down during this hot summer LA heat, you will learn to love my green bean ice cream!
Since the green bean soup was already pre-made by mom, I will be skipping the ingredients and recipe.
INGREDIENTS
- 1 cup milk (I substituted for 1 cup of half and half)
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 4 egg yolks
- 1 cup white sugar
- 3 cups of strained cooked and cooled green bean
DIRECTIONS
- Combine milk and cream and bring to boil over medium heat.
- Whisk together the egg yolks and sugar in a medium bowl
- Ladle 1/4 cup of the hot cream into the egg yolk mixture and whisk until smooth
- Pour mixture into cream and put over low heat until it thickens into a custard consistency
- Cool mixture and add green beans and mix, and refrigerate over night
- Pour into ice cream maker

Hey Yolanda! How did this ice cream taste?! I love green bean!! Your blog is awesome with the constant updates of your ice cream challenges. I love them!
You know what the next challenge should be… that you should do with me? I’ve recently had an obsession with French MACARONS and I’ve been reading everything there is to know about them — I really want to “master” macarons just like the French… what do you think? Let me know!!
Sometimes it is very useful and interesting to add a video to post, that makes your imagination process much more clear.
Thanks for taking a peak Ny. French MACARONS? I’m up for that challenge..let’s do it!
Yolanda! I had no idea you knew how to make ice cream. Impressive! I’ll be knocking on your door for some. =)
You are welcome to come over anytime for some, Paola!
Thanks, thats quite useful stuff to know! I must admit to being a bit useless in the kitchen, but I’m trying my best to learn. Admitting is the first step to recovery right!!? I promised to cook something for my wife this weekend for the first time – very exciting! I found some really simple recipes at this website, seems to be designed exactly for people like me, which is great! Anyway, thanks, I’ll be sure to bookmark your site to read more later.
